Acnitic Keratosis

 
Actinic keratosis is a small, rough, raised area found on skin that has been exposed to the sun over a long period of time. Over many years, some Actinic Keratoses may develop into a type of skin cancer.

In the beginning, Actinic Keratoses are frequently so small that they are recognized by touch rather than sight. It feels as if you were running a finger over sand paper.

There are many times the number of invisible (subclinical) lesions as visible ones on the skin surface. If you have Actinic Keratosis, it indicates that you have sustained sun damage and could develop any kind of skin cancer – not just squamous cell carcinoma. However, relatively few of them actually become cancers, a process that typically takes years.

How are they treated?

Here at the Royal Tunbridge Wells Skin & Laser Clinic we use an Erbium laser to evaporate the unwanted tissue in very precise and thin layers. This advanced laser procedure is only undertaken by an experienced medical practitioner.

What can I expect from the treatment?

Immediately after the laser treatment a small wound will appear in the treated area. This superficial wound takes 7-10 days to heal. Keep the wound clean by daily washing with cool water.

You may be asked by your doctor to use an anti-bacterial ointment for 3-5days. You should protect the area treated by using sunscreen all year round.
