Birth Marks
Here at the Royal Tunbridge Wells Skin & Laser Clinic we can successfully treat birthmarks and other deeper, larger areas of pigmentation with a “Q” Switch Laser. The depth of the lesion and its characteristics affect the response to treatment.
An initial consultation with one of our medical practitioners will determine the type of birthmark and treatment options can then be discussed.
How does treatment work?
The “Q” Switch Laser generates a high powered beam of light which is delivered in an extremely short pulse. The light is absorbed by the excess pigment and breaks apart the cells that contain the pigment.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments required will vary depending on the type of birthmark. You may need anything between 3-15 treatments; however, in some cases
birthmarks can re-occur.
What does treatment feel like?
Most patients find this treatment mildly uncomfortable but tolerable. The sensation felt is similar to an elastic band snapping at the skin.
What do I expect after treatment?
You may expect some redness and swelling. The pigmented birthmark will darken and form a ‘crust’ which will shed after a few days. Sunscreen with a SPF of minimum 30 should be used to protect the new skin all year round.
